American singer in trouble for tax evasion has defended a song where she says society is crumbling because of ‘girl men’, ‘drag queens’, and ‘social transvestism’American singer, rapper and tax evader Lauryn Hill has defended the anti-gay lyrics in her new song.
She says she considers ‘social transvestism’, ‘drag queens’ and ‘girl men’ are as bad as ‘pimps’, ‘pushers’ and ‘serial criminals’.
Hill claims her lyrics are not targeting any specific group but rather ‘everyone in our society who hides behind neurotic behavior’.
‘Neurotic Society is a song about people not being, or not being able to be, who and what they truly are, due to the current social construct,’ she wrote on her Tumblr.
‘Everyone has a right to their own beliefs. Although I do not necessarily agree with what everyone says or does, I do believe in everyone’s right to protest.’
She added: ‘The overarching message of my music is to get up and stop compromising! And hopefully it will stimulate and motivate the changes that our society needs.’
The R&B singer must turn herself into authorities 8 July to serve three months in a federal prison for failing to pay her rent as well as taxes on $1.8 million (€1.38m) in earnings.
this was really disappointing to read. lauryn hill’s homophobia is no surprise to me at this point. its something i kinda caught on to when i listened to her lyrics more closely.
i guess maybe she fails to realize (or care) that as a hetero person, especially one who isn’t exactly coming out fighting for queer rights, maybe you’re not the person to use queer bodies and identities in service to a larger point about the conditions of a “neurotic society” (hence the egregious comparison between cross dressing being as bad as pimps, drug dealers, and criminals)
sometimes when hetero folks fuck up, its just better to either apologize or say nothing at all
fuck this shit, ugh
Boobitchbai.
She has said some very questionable shit in some of her songs on her first album so I’m not surprised at all. Disappointed as hell tho :|
Lauryn……………….
